Iolite is pleochroic, which means that every way you look at each gem it will look different. The same gem can look as clear as water from one direction to violet and sapphire blue in another. It has also been called Water Sapphire and Viking's Compass because the Vikings used it's pleochroism to find the sun on heavily overcast or foggy days.
